The readings collected here—of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Rosa Luxemburg, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Leon Trotsky, and Antonio Gramsci— reflect the experience of the labor, socialist, and communist movements that did so much to shape modern history. A dedication to working-class revolution gives coherence to the influential philosophical, economic, sociological, and historical works of these writers. Paul Le Blanc's introductory essay probes the structure and dynamics of Marxism as a political orientation, tracing connections among components that can be found in (...) the readings: the theory of capitalist development, the theory of the labor movement, the strategy of revolution, the conception of the transition to socialism. An advocate of radical democracy and individual responsibility, Rosa Luxemburg remains the most eminent representative of the libertarian socialist tradition. A reevaluation and renewal within the Left has allowed the ideas of Luxemburg to assume greater vitality and relevance today than ever before. This volume provides an essential representative sampling of Luxemburg's writings that have generally not been among those commonly anthologized. That she had a powerful impact on every generation of the 20th century is documented in the accompanying essays, (...) which include scholarly reflections, comradely arguments, and even a loving reminiscence. Paul Le Blanc, who has been active in labor and social movements for many years, explains that the socialism that animated Luxemburg as a thinker and revolutionary activist involved a vision of society in which our economic resources would be socially owned, democratically controlled, and utilized for the benefit of all people. Luxemburg was convinced this goal could only be realized through the struggles of the working-class majority. The goals Luxemburg sought-popular sovereignty, rule by the people, democracy-were lost in the decades following her 1919 martyrdom. The nomenclature of the Anthropocene for this geological epoch marks in a novel way the global impact of human activity on the world. Consequently, it creatively raises the alarm bell of global environmental devastation. However, the narrative implicit in the Anthropocene presents challenges to use it as a departure point for developing an ethics of responsibility, as it contains morally relevant but ambiguous etiologies, phenomenological challenges to discrete human agency, and the potential erasure of both causes and victims of global (...) environmental degradation. This challenge compounds the challenges to traditional models of responsibility‐as‐imputation by global forms of environmental degradation signaled in the Anthropocene. Our new epoch demands new models of responsibility. This article draws upon neglected work by Paul Ricoeur to reconstruct a twofold model of responsibility: (1) responsibility‐as‐imputation and (2) responsibility for the fragile other and the domains that amplify fragility. It shows that a twofold model can more completely respond to harms elicited by anthropogenic environmental degradation by maintaining the benefits of traditional models of responsibility‐as‐accountability while dramatically expanding the subject and objects of responsibility through attention to the fragile and thus better serving us as we navigate responsibility in the Anthropocene. From 1919 to 1929, the great Hungarian Marxist philosopher Georg Lukács was one of the leaders of the Hungarian Communist Party, immersed not simply in theorising but also in significant practical-political work. Along with labour leader Jenö Landler, he led a faction opposing an ultra-left sectarian orientation represented by Béla Kun. If seen in connection with this factional struggle, key works of Lukács in this period – History and Class Consciousness, Lenin: A Study in the Unity of His Thought, Tailism (...) and the Dialectic and ‘The Blum Theses’ – can be seen as forming a consistent, coherent, sophisticated variant of Leninism. Influential readings of these works interpret them as being ultra-leftist or proto-Stalinist. Such readings distort the reality. Lukács’s orientation and outlook of 1923–9 are, rather, more consistent with the orientation advanced by Lenin and Trotsky in the Third and Fourth Congresses of the Communist International. After his decisive political defeat, Lukács concluded that it was necessary to renounce his distinctive political orientation, and completely abandon the terrain of practical revolutionary politics, if he hoped to remain inside the Communist movement. This he did, adapting to Stalinism and shifting his efforts to literary criticism and philosophy. But the theorisations connected to his revolutionary politics of the 1920s continue to have relevance for revolutionary activists of the twenty-first century. (shrink)

In this paper, a mathematical model of the respiratory mechanics is used to reproduce experimental signal waveforms acquired from three newborn lambs. As the main challenge is to determine specific lamb parameters, a sensitivity analysis has been realized to find the most influent parameters, which are identified using an evolutionary algorithm. Results show a close match between experimental and simulated pressure and flow waveforms obtained during spontaneous ventilation and pleural pressure variations acquired during the application of positive pressure, since root (...) mean square errors equal to 0.0119, 0.0052 and 0.0094. The identified parameters were discussed in light of previous knowledge of respiratory mechanics in the newborn. (shrink)

Des perspectives se dégagent – au-delà du redéploiement des questions de recherche autour des mouvements souhaitant conjurer l’effondrement, elles oscillent entre un pessimisme non résigné, attentif à des questions de relocalisation, et l’implication directe dans de nouveaux mouvements écologistes.

The growing field of Lenin Studies has been nurtured by the growth of crises and struggles in our own time and may contribute to present-day activists’ efforts at developing revolutionary strategy, organisation and struggle. Surveying this field, it is worth focusing on three recent studies by Antonio Negri, Tamás Krausz and Alan Shandro which give attention to the methodological core of what can be called ‘Leninism’. All three distinguish Lenin’s approach to Marxism from that of such prominent Marxists as Kautsky. (...) The result, highlighted by aspects of Lenin’s functioning in the early Communist International, provides a more consistent activist- and revolutionary edge that might have relevance for future struggles, particularly in relation to the question of organisation. Lists of species underpin many fields of human endeavour, but there are currently no universally accepted principles for deciding which biological species should be accepted when there are alternative taxonomic treatments (and, by extension, which scientific names should be applied to those species). As improvements in information technology make it easier to communicate, access, and aggregate biodiversity information, there is a need for a framework that helps taxonomists and the users of taxonomy decide which taxa and names should be used (...) by society whilst continuing to encourage taxonomic research that leads to new species discoveries, new knowledge of species relationships, and the refinement of existing species concepts. Here, we present 10 principles that can underpin such a governance framework, namely (i) the species list must be based on science and free from nontaxonomic considerations and interference, (ii) governance of the species list must aim for community support and use, (iii) all decisions about list composition must be transparent, (iv) the governance of validated lists of species is separate from the governance of the names of taxa, (v) governance of lists of accepted species must not constrain academic freedom, (vi) the set of criteria considered sufficient to recognise species boundaries may appropriately vary between different taxonomic groups but should be consistent when possible, (vii) a global list must balance conflicting needs for currency and stability by having archived versions, (viii) contributors need appropriate recognition, (ix) list content should be traceable, and (x) a global listing process needs both to encompass global diversity and to accommodate local knowledge of that diversity. We conclude by outlining issues that must be resolved if such a system of taxonomic list governance and a unified list of accepted scientific names generated are to be universally adopted. (shrink)

Cet article propose un éclairage de la notion humboldtienne de langue comme individualité spirituelle. Il dessine l’arrière-plan historique et philosophique de la notion d’individualité sur lequel la pensée de Humboldt se fonde, mais se détache également. Comment penser une langue (particulière) sur fond de langues multiples aux identités propres et aux variations parfois très grandes? Quels sont leurs rapports? Le recours à la notion d’organisme vivant pour décrire la langue, inséparable des usages et des pratiques qui s’y attachent, permet d’envisager (...) aussi bien les langues particulières que la langue en général (cette faculté proprement humaine) comme liées par un dynamisme. Plus que des objets naturels, les langues sont des êtres-reconnus (c’est-à-dire pratiqués), leur identité comme leur dynamisme est inséparable d’une dimension spirituelle. This study shows that double thymidine block treatment efficiently arrests the EO771 cells in the S‐phase without altering cell growth or survival. A long‐term analysis of cell behavior, using 5(6)‐carboxyfluorescein diacetate N‐succinimidyl ester (CFSE) staining, show synchronization to be stable and consistent over time. The EO771 cell line is a medullary breast‐adenocarcinoma cell line isolated from a spontaneous murine mammary tumor, and can be used to generate murine tumor implantation models. Different biological (serum or amino acid deprivation), physical (elutriation, mitotic (...) shake‐off), or chemical (colchicine, nocodazole, thymidine) treatments are widely used for cell synchronization. Of the different methods tested, the double thymidine block is the most efficient for synchronization of murine EO771 cells if a large quantity of highly synchronized cells is recommended to study functional and biochemical events occurring in specific points of cell cycle progression. "Du Sang sur les idées. Ce titre choc est venu à l'auteur après la découverte d'un lien entre les grandes catastrophes humaines du XXe siècle plus de 160 millions de morts et les idées de deux philosophes, Marx et Nietzsche. Le paroxysme du livre est la proposition d'une instruction judiciaire contre ces deux auteurs pour incitation à des crimes contre l'humanité. Pour autant, d'autres idées essaient, depuis l'antiquité, de se former à partir d'une méthode qui s'est beaucoup développée dans la (...) science, mais peu en philosophie : le contrôle par l'expérience. L'expérience permet de trancher entre le vrai et le faux, mais aussi le livre le montre entre le moral et l'immoral, entre le juste et le crime. Les idées des Lumières ont été créées précisément avec la méthode expérimentale. Mis ont construit le monde contemporain parce qu'elles étaient justes, intellectuellement et moralement. "Le monde, a écrit Diderot, est une balle abandonnée à la raquette des philosophes". Ils peuvent l'envoyer en enfer. Plus jamais ça : il ne peut plus y avoir de sang sur les idées. Cette tendance catastrophiste risque bien, non de nous éclairer sur notre situation, mais de nous aveugler. Nous finissons par ne plus distinguer les "paillettes d'or" (Diderot) du présent. Cela est sans doute plus manifeste dans les arts qu'ailleurs. Ce livre veut attirer l'attention sur la permanence du pouvoir créateur humain, notamment à travers (...) l'art contemporain, pourtant si bafoué par de nouveaux prophètes de malheur. La beauté n'a pas disparu pour qui sait la découvrir. Elle a une dimension morale, car la beauté fait vivre et respirer, instille le goût d'assumer son existence, donc de vouloir la vie plutôt que rien. Elle a une dimension religieuse en tant qu'elle fait signe vers plus grand, plus beau, plus vivant qu'elle. La sécularisation de nos sociétés peut certes troubler nos regards, nous rendant insensibles à ces dimensions de la beauté. Il n'en reste pas moins que, pour quiconque entretient en soi une vie culturelle et spirituelle, la beauté n'a pas cessé d'être évocatrice, et donc d'inspirer le désir de vivre, par-delà les "mille morts amères" qui parsèment nos vies. Nietzsche n'est jamais tout à fait où l'on croit savoir qu'il se trouve. Est-il sûr par exemple que le philosophe soit aussi ennemi de la raison qu'on l'a dit? Son athéisme ne serait-il pas une condition d'affirmation renouvelée d'une luxuriance du divin? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions intempestives que pose ce livre.

La parole du mille-pattes Titre etrange pour un essai de philosophie politique qui convoque les auteurs qui, depuis Platon, s'efforcent de cerner ce qui fonde notre existence sociale. " C'est avec de bonnes paroles que le mille-pattes traverse un champ fleuri de fourmis. " Selon ce dicton de Cote-d'Ivoire, ce n'est qu'avec ces bonnes paroles, sinceres et raisonnables, que le mille-pattes a evite un conflit avec les fourmis. Noble ancienne tradition qui a souvent permis a la discussion collective de prevenir (...) la violence des vengeances. Au siecle des Lumieres, substituer le droit et le libre debat aux rapports de force fut une promesse liee a tout ideal democratique. Or les siecles qui ont suivi ont comme jamais deploye des violences massives, souvent au nom de la liberte et du droit. Ici et la, malgre tout, le debat public et le souci de reconciliation ont permis de depasser des contradictions qui paraissaient insurmontables. La metaphore du mille-pattes vient rappeler que ce fut longtemps une regle commune. Apres avoir depasse la logique des vengeances individuelles et collectives, la justice civile et internationale devient parfois une forme legale de vengeance des vainqueurs, qu'elle pretend pourtant remplacer. La popularite de Gandhi, Luther King et Mandela, qui ont triomphe par les vertus de la simple parole, est-elle un echo du passe de l'humanite ou la promesse d'une reinvention a venir de la politique? En reprenant ces questions a la lumiere de l'heritage de vingt-cinq siecles de pensee, tentons de tracer les contours de cette " philosophie du mille-pattes " que le monde actuel, plus violent et inegalitaire que jamais, laisse affleurer comme un avenir possible. Le proslogion de saint Anselme n'est pas une oeuvre tres connue, bien que les commentaires de ses chapitres 2 a 4 sur l'argument appele par Kant ontologique soient en nombre infini.

Nous tenons généralement pour acquis et même évident que les êtres humains ont une supériorité sur les autres espèces et sur la nature en général. Ne sommes-nous pas appelés à "dominer la nature" et, par l'intelligence et l'esprit d'entreprise, à en tirer le meilleur pour le bénéfice de tous? Or, cette exception humaine est aujourd'hui de plus en plus vivement contestée, surtout à l'égard des animaux, mais aussi par la mise en cause de la domination de la nature dont on (...) mesure les effets catastrophiques pour notre avenir commun. Cette contestation n'est pas une question purement académique. Elle a des répercussions considérables sur le statut de l'homme et sur son rapport au monde. Ce livre prend la mesure des conséquences de ces critiques, mais veut surtout défendre la thèse d'une exception de l'humanité en développant une anthropologie de la vulnérabilité humaine qui, loin des rationalismes ambitieux, donne à l'espèce humaine sa juste place, admet sa fragilité et fonde aussi le respect qu'on lui doit. Il récuse tout autant le mythe d'une société prétendument "postmortelle" qui, en réalité, relève des mêmes illusions que les thèses sur la fin de l'exception humaine. (shrink)
